The family quotient established by the Family Allowance Fund (CAF) or the Social Agricultural Mutual (MSA) is an indicator of your monthly income level. It takes into account your family composition, your professional and/or replacement income (such as unemployment benefits), and the family benefits you receive.
At the start of the school year, it is often requested for the allocation of certain aids, the calculation of the price you must pay for school lunch, daycare, etc.
There is also another family quotient, determined by the tax administration. The family quotient used by the CAF and the MSA is not determined in the same way as the one established by the tax administration.
How is the family quotient used by the CAF calculated?
Your family quotient depends:
-
on your taxable income for your household, excluding tax deductions;
-
on the number of tax shares allocated to your household based on your family situation.
To calculate your family quotient, the annual taxable income of your household (excluding tax deductions) is divided by 12. The monthly amount of family benefits you receive is added. The result is then divided by the number of shares allocated to you based on the composition of your household.
The number of shares for calculating the family quotient is allocated according to the following scale:
-
Couple or single person: 2 shares.
-
First child under your care: add 0.5 share.
-
Second child under your care: add 0.5 share.
-
Third child under your care: add 1 share.
-
From the fourth child: add 0.5 share per child.
-
Child with a disability: add 0.5 share.
Where to retrieve your family quotient?
The family quotient is generated by the Family Allowance Fund or the Social Agricultural Mutual.
