Care homes: three new quality indicators to inform elderly people and their families Published August 20, 2026 - Service Public / Directorate of Legal and Administrative Information (Prime Minister's Office)
New information is being made available to elderly people and their families regarding care homes; this is intended to help them, in particular, make the most informed choice of facility. Service Public tells you more.

Several pieces of information relating to the services and amenities of care homes (residential facilities for dependent elderly people) are available in the official directory of these facilities, available on the website pour-les-personnes-agees.gouv.fr. These include:

the number of single and double rooms;
-
the number of places eligible for housing social assistance (ASH);
-
whether or not there is a night nurse and/or a coordinating physician;
-
equipment available at the facility (hydrotherapy, rooms equipped for physiotherapy or psychomotor therapy, educational workshop rooms, in-house pharmacy, etc.);
-
whether or not the facility has one or more coordination support systems to assist people with complex health difficulties and needs.
Since August 2026, new information has been available relating to care home staff; these include:
-
the ratio of medical, paramedical and socio-educational staff (this corresponds to the number of staff members present per elderly person accommodated);
-
the staff absenteeism rate, measured over the previous year;
-
the staff turnover rate (this allows you to know the renewal of staff at the facility over the previous year).
The prices of accommodation and services offered by each facility are also listed in the directory.
Since December 2025, each care home record in the directory at pour-les-personnes-agees.gouv.fr includes a link to the latest quality assessment report for the facility.
These reports are evaluated by independent organizations based on a national methodology defined by the High Health Authority.
How to compare care homes using the indicators?
In the care home directory, an "add to comparison" feature allows you to select up to 3 facilities and obtain a comparison:
-
the characteristics of the facilities (public, non-profit or for-profit private status, room profile – single, double, larger than two beds –, the number of places eligible for housing social assistance, etc.);
-
accommodation prices;
-
the various services offered (care and support services, the presence or absence of a sensory stimulation room, etc.).
Changes to care home indicators are expected by 2027. These include:
-
improved clarity of these indicators for elderly people and their families (this must be done following work involving a panel of users and facility directors);
-
an expansion of the scope of these indicators to include other types of structures serving elderly people and facilities for people with disabilities.
