Starting June 16, 2026, cadmium exposure screening will be reimbursed by Health Insurance. This measure follows a decision by the National Union of Health Insurance Funds published in the Official Journal on June 2, 2026.

In 2024, the Haute Autorité de santé (HAS) recommended screening individuals "potentially overexposed to cadmium due to their place of residence." A report published by Anses in March 2026 proposed action levers to reduce the French population's body burden of this substance.

Cadmium exposure screening: who and how?

Cadmium exposure screening will be reimbursed by Health Insurance up to 60% for at-risk patients, performed at private laboratories (the remainder covered by supplementary health insurance). Patients will need to pay a flat-rate contribution of €2, as with every medical biology procedure or medical consultation.

This screening must be prescribed by a doctor and is intended for:

  • "individuals potentially overexposed to cadmium due to their place of residence," when the soil has been previously recognized by competent authorities as being polluted by cadmium;

  • individuals monitored due to "chronic poisoning" from cadmium linked to their place of residence.

The test consists of a urinary cadmium measurement (called cadmiuria) performed as the first step. A blood measurement (cadmiaemia), also reimbursed, may be carried out additionally if the cadmiuria level is high.

These measurements must be performed under conditions defined by the HAS.

A bill aimed at reducing health risks related to cadmium contamination in food was adopted by the National Assembly in its first reading on June 3, 2026. It provides for lowering the limit values for cadmium in phosphate fertilizers in France in two progressive stages. An implementing decree is planned.
