Waste collection and illegal dumping: higher fines since June 5, 2026 Published on June 10, 2026 - Service Public / Directorate for Legal and Administrative Information (Prime Minister)
Non-compliance with waste collection rules is now subject to stricter penalties. A decree published in the Official Journal on June 4 strengthens regulations regarding waste disposal, sorting, and abandonment. Service Public explains.

Stricter penalties for non-compliance with collection rules
Since June 5, 2026, certain offenses have moved from the 2nd to the 3rd class of contraventions.
You must now pay:
-
€45: reduced fixed fine (reduced amount if paid within 10 days of being issued);
-
€68: standard fixed fine ("normal" amount if paid within the prescribed period, usually 45 days);
-
€180: increased fixed fine (higher amount if not paid within the deadlines);
-
Up to €450 in case of court judgment (maximum amount a judge may impose if you contest or fail to pay).
The decree specifically provides for penalties in cases of:
-
depositing waste outside authorized days and hours;
-
failure to comply with sorting instructions;
-
use of unsuitable containers;
-
leaving waste at the foot of bins or designated areas.
If you leave a bin or household waste container permanently on the street, you risk a fine of up to €750.
Abandonment of waste in natural areas
To strengthen environmental protection, penalties are increased when offenses occur in natural areas with special protected status, such as national parks, nature reserves, or listed sites.
In these cases, offenses may constitute a 4th-class contravention, namely:
-
€135 (fixed fine);
-
up to €750 in case of court judgment.
These apply notably to depositing, abandoning, or littering waste in these areas.
Abandoning waste in public spaces may be penalized by a fine of up to €1,500 (5th-class contravention), or even more in case of repeat offenses.
