Natural gas reference selling price drops by 4.8% starting June 1 Published on May 13, 2026 - Service Public / Directorate for Legal and Administrative Information (Prime Minister)
May saw an average increase of 15.4% including tax in the natural gas reference selling price, following the first weeks of the war in Iran. Since then, a drop in prices has been observed on gas markets. The Energy Regulatory Commission (CRE) publishes a monthly reference selling price for natural gas for residential consumers, since regulated gas tariffs ended on June 30, 2023.

The natural gas reference selling price consists of three components:
-
supply, which includes procurement costs and expenses associated with this natural gas supply activity;
-
transmission, i.e., network and storage tariffs;
-
taxes (VAT, excise duty on natural gas, and transmission tariff contribution - CTA), set by the State.
As indicated by the Energy Regulatory Commission on May 11, 2026, the "supply" component will change on June 1, 2026. This is due to a drop in prices on gas markets in April, after a significant increase in March caused by the start of the war in Iran. Thus, the natural gas reference selling price will decrease on June 1 by an average of 4.8% including tax, bringing it to €152.86/MWh including tax (compared to €160.54/MWh including tax on May 1).
The CRE estimates that this will result in an average decrease of €1.26 including tax on bills for the month of June. This reduction applies to consumers whose offers are indexed to the natural gas reference selling price. Households with fixed-price offers are therefore not affected by this change.
The National Energy Mediator offers an independent comparator for electricity and gas offers.
What is the reference price?
The natural gas reference selling price, published monthly by the CRE, informs consumers in the context of the end of the regulated natural gas sales tariff (TRVG).
It is variable and published for informational purposes; it represents an average estimate of the costs borne by suppliers for supplying natural gas to a residential customer.
For consumers, it serves as a compass for comparing offers, giving them an idea of what the regulated tariffs would have been if they had been maintained. The CRE specifies that suppliers now freely construct their offers based on supply conditions (energy cost on the wholesale market), their commercial choices, and the contractual terms they propose. However, some marketed offers are indexed to the natural gas reference selling price.
The CRE reminds that the supplier has a duty to inform and advise in their contractual relationship with the client; they must offer the plan best suited to the consumer's needs.
