Fuel: what are the conditions for receiving the aid for “high-mileage drivers”? Published on May 6, 2026 - Service Public / Direction de l'information légale et administrative (Premier ministre)
A 50-euro allowance is being introduced to limit the impact of rising fuel prices. This aid is intended for working people who use their vehicle, particularly to get to their workplace. Service Public outlines the different conditions you must meet to receive this subsidy.

Nearly 3 million French people will be eligible for the fuel allowance. This aid has been introduced to reduce the impact of rising fuel costs resulting from the conflict in the Middle East. It amounts to €50; this represents 20 euro cents per liter, based on average fuel consumption over 3 months.
Several conditions must be met to receive this subsidy. To be eligible, you must:
-
have been tax resident in France for 2024;
-
have been born before January 1, 2009 .
You must also use a personal vehicle for professional purposes and be considered a “high-mileage driver.” To fall into this category, you must:
-
travel a distance of at least 15 km per home-to-work trip (30 km round trip);
-
or travel at least 8,000 km per year as part of your professional activity (this distance includes home-to-work journeys).
What are the income conditions for receiving the fuel allowance?
The resources taken into account for receiving the fuel allowance are those received in 2024.
To receive the aid, you must belong to a household whose reference taxable income per share, for 2024, was less than or equal to €16,880. This reference taxable income is shown on the first page of your tax notice for 2024 income, issued in 2025 (the tax notice is available in your Finances publiques space on impots.gouv.fr or in the impots.gouv mobile app).
The income you declared for 2024 must fall into one of the following categories:
-
wages, salaries and similar income (excluding unemployment and early retirement benefits);
-
industrial and commercial profits;
-
non-commercial profits;
-
agricultural profits.
In addition, you are not eligible for the fuel allowance if you were liable for real estate wealth tax for 2024 .
What are the vehicle-related conditions?
Your vehicle must meet all the following conditions for you to receive the fuel allowance:
-
be a two-, three- or four-wheeled land motor vehicle;
-
have a combustion engine or be a non-plug-in hybrid;
-
be properly insured on the date of the application .
-
not be considered a damaged vehicle (within the meaning of the provisions of articles L. 327-1 to L. 327-6 of the Highway Code).
The following vehicles are excluded from the fuel allowance scheme:
-
heavy motor quadricycles;
-
electric or hydrogen vehicles;
-
agricultural vehicles;
-
heavy goods vehicles;
-
company cars or service vehicles.
How do you apply for the fuel allowance?
A form will be available from May 27 on the impots.gouv.fr website to apply for the fuel allowance.
You will need to provide:
-
your civil status details;
-
your tax number;
-
the registration number of the vehicle used;
-
the vehicle registration certificate number.
You will also need to certify that you meet the vehicle-use conditions regarding the distances traveled.
If you meet all the required conditions, the aid will be paid into your bank account (the one you provided for your annual income tax return) within about 10 days after your application.
You can receive only one fuel allowance; and the aid can be granted only once for the same vehicle.
The tax authorities may carry out an audit for a period of 5 years from the payment of the fuel allowance and ask you to produce any supporting document. You must therefore keep the documents proving your eligibility for the aid for 5 years .
