Secure Your Home with the Vacation Peace Operation Published on July 4, 2025 - Updated on July 13, 2026 - Service Public / Direction of Legal and Administrative Information (Prime Minister)
Summer vacations are approaching. To prevent potential burglaries, the free Vacation Peace Operation (VPO) offers a service to monitor your home during your absence.
Add to my calendar The Vacation Peace Operation is a police and gendarmerie service that watches over your home during extended absences and alerts you in case of anomalies (you or a trusted person nearby). The monitoring is carried out by patrols day and night, weekdays and weekends.
The service operates in all French departments. Registration can be done throughout the year, even outside of school vacations. The absence period cannot exceed one year.
You can complete the registration process online.
How to Register?
Registration in person
Remember to register a few days before your departure, either in person or online.
For in-person registration, you must bring your ID and proof of residence. Keep the receipt of your registration request.
The registration conditions vary depending on your place of residence, whether it is in a police or gendarmerie zone: check your point of contact.
-
Home concerned: primary residences.
-
Absence duration: between 3 days and 3 months.
-
Registration: 45 to 3 days before departure.
-
Home concerned: primary and secondary residences.
-
Absence duration: up to 12 months.
-
Registration: 45 days until the day before departure.
The connection is made via the Service Public site:
-
log in via France Connect;
-
complete the online form.
Upon completion of your online registration, you will receive a receipt of your request by email as well as a form summarizing all the information provided.
Do you want to modify your registration (absence duration, address)? Even if it was done online, you must go to the police station or gendarmerie office responsible for your home.
Remember to indicate if your home is equipped with an alarm system or a presence simulator, and if someone collects your mail or waters your plants so that it is not mistaken for a burglary. You must also inform the authorities in case of an early return.
Some Tips Before You Leave
To minimize the risk of burglary, the police and gendarmerie recommend:
-
not to mention your vacation dates on social media or your voicemail;
-
asking a trusted person to collect your mail as a full mailbox is a sign of prolonged absence (do not leave a key under a doormat or flower pot). You can also have your mail redirected to your vacation location by the postal service;
-
forwarding incoming calls on your landline to your mobile number;
-
securing the locks on doors, windows, and shutters. Check the condition of your locks and deadbolts. A neighbor or friend can come to open and close the shutters;
-
not leaving large amounts of cash in your home and storing valuable items such as jewelry and art in a safe place after photographing them. If necessary, have them appraised by an expert and inquire with your insurance company about their protection.
If you are a victim or witness of a burglary, contact the police and gendarmerie (17) immediately and do not touch anything to avoid destroying potential evidence.
