The online citizen registration process is simplified Published on November 13, 2025 - Updated on April 22, 2026 - Service Public / Directorate of Legal and Administrative Information (Prime Minister)

All young French citizens must register between the day of their 16th birthday and the following 3 months. This process can be done online or at the town hall of the municipality of residence. The online procedure has been simplified starting November 17; the number of supporting documents required has been reduced, among other changes.

It is mandatory for young French citizens to complete their citizen registration. The registration certificate is particularly necessary to register for an exam (BEP, baccalauréat...) or for an administrative competition in France before the age of 18.

If you were born French, you can complete your citizen registration from the day you turn 16; you then have 3 months from your birthday to complete this process.

If you became French between the ages of 16 and 25, you must complete your citizen registration within one month of obtaining French nationality.

If you have not completed your citizen registration within these deadlines, you have the option to regularize your situation until the age of 25.

You can complete your citizen registration online or at the town hall of your municipality.

The online procedure for citizen registration is carried out on the site Service-public.gouv.fr (you must log in with your Service Public account or via FranceConnect).

This process evolves starting November 17, 2025. From this date, several pathways are offered so that you can complete the process according to your profile. You can choose to indicate that the registration is being done for:

  • "myself", if you are a person aged 16 to 25 completing this process independently;

  • "my minor child", if you are a parent completing the process for your minor child;

  • "the young person I legally represent", if you are the guardian of a minor or the legal representative of an adult under legal protection (guardianship, etc.).

Changes regarding the supporting documents to provide

To complete the citizen registration, you must present the following documents:

  • an updated family record book;

  • a valid national identity card or passport, or any other document proving your French nationality.

Starting November 17, for the family record book, only the pages related to the parents and the page where the young person completing the registration appears need to be submitted during the online process; it is no longer necessary to provide the pages of the family record book that concern siblings.

Furthermore, in the context of the online citizen registration process, you no longer need to present proof when requesting an exemption for medical reasons from the defense and citizenship day (JDC). You only need to indicate the reason, which can be that:

The National Service and Youth Center you depend on will contact you later to assess your situation.

At the end of the online process, your citizen registration request is sent to the town hall of your municipality. Some town halls also require proof of residence.

Starting November 17, one of the steps in the online process allows you to submit proof of residence (in the name of one of your parents if you are a minor) or a housing certificate to facilitate your registration by your municipality, prior to any potential request from your town hall in this regard.

If you want to know how to complete your citizen registration at your municipality's town hall, you can consult our practical sheet "Citizen Registration" (section "how to complete citizen registration").
