Funerals: a mandatory information notice to better support families Published on August 19, 2026 - Service Public / Legal and Administrative Information Department (Prime Minister)
As of October 1, 2026, funeral operators will be required to provide families with a standardized information notice when organizing funerals. Provided for by a decree and an order published in the Official Journal on August 14, 2026, this notice will present key information about families' rights and funeral services.

This notice will be identical for all professionals in the sector and will allow families to better understand their rights, compare offers, and distinguish between mandatory and optional services.
What information will you find in this notice?
All funeral operators (funeral service companies, municipalities, or associations) must provide families with a standardized information notice containing information about:

families' rights regarding funerals, including their freedom to choose the funeral service company and the main procedures to follow;
-
mandatory services for organizing funerals;
-
services required only in certain situations, such as to meet health constraints or those related to the transport or preservation of the body.
The notice will also remind that funeral quotes are free and without commitment. It will indicate that families can contact multiple companies to compare offers before making their choice.
The document will present the main mandatory services, including the provision of a coffin with an identification plate, a waterproof basin, and four handles. It will also detail specific obligations related to burial or cremation.
Practical information will also be included in the notice regarding the transport of the body, the different places where the deceased can be kept before the funeral (home, morgue, or funeral home), as well as the procedures for scattering ashes.
Finally, the notice will indicate the possible remedies in case of dispute with a funeral operator and the possibility of contacting the consumer mediator to which it is affiliated.
To ensure identical information regardless of which funeral operator is consulted, this notice must be neutral and contain no company name, logo, or advertising message. It must also be displayed prominently in establishments open to the public and published on the operator's website if they have one.
This development follows a recommendation from the National Consumer Council, which had advocated for strengthening the pre-contractual information provided to families when organizing funerals.
