Infant bronchiolitis: preventive treatments with increased reimbursement from Health Insurance Published on August 26, 2026 - Service Public / Directorate of Legal and Administrative Information (Prime Minister)
Bronchiolitis is an epidemic respiratory disease that affects nearly 30% of infants under 2 years old each winter. As of August 31st, parents will benefit from improved reimbursement from Health Insurance for 2 preventive treatments against this viral infection.

Bronchiolitis is characterized by an episode of respiratory distress, with signs including cough and rapid, wheezing breathing. It can affect infants under 2 years old throughout the year, but is more common in winter, and this viral infection is highly contagious.
It is usually a mild disease. However, very young children, and particularly infants under 2 months, can develop a more severe form requiring hospitalization.
The bronchiolitis prevention strategy, established by health authorities, has been strengthened in recent years through the integration of 2 new preventive treatments:

A monoclonal antibody treatment (Beyfortus), which is designed to protect babies from the virus responsible for bronchiolitis during their first at-risk season. It is administered to the infant in a single injection. Protection is ensured from the sixth day after injection and for a period of at least 5 months. This treatment was approved by health authorities in 2022.

A vaccine (Abrysvo), which is administered to pregnant women from the end of the 7th month of pregnancy through the end of the 8th month. This vaccine allows the mother to develop antibodies that are transmitted directly to the baby through the placenta; the child is thus immunized from birth to 6 months. This treatment was approved by health authorities in 2023.
On the High Authority for Health website, you can consult the document "Bronchiolitis: how to protect your future baby from a severe form?", which is designed to help future parents make a choice regarding protection of their child against this infection.
Currently, Beyfortus and Abrysvo are reimbursed by Health Insurance at 30%. As of August 31st, coverage of these 2 treatments by Health Insurance will be 65%.
As part of the annual vaccination and immunization campaign against bronchiolitis, Beyfortus can be administered to infants directly at the maternity ward; in this case, treatment is covered 100% by Health Insurance, without having to pay upfront.
From the first day of the sixth month of pregnancy, pregnant women receive 100% coverage of their reimbursable medical expenses (pharmaceutical purchases, laboratory tests, etc.), without having to pay upfront. This coverage by Health Insurance applies to all medical expenses, whether or not related to pregnancy.
In this context, the Abrysvo vaccine is thus covered 100% by Health Insurance.
Pregnant women must declare their pregnancy before the end of the 3rd month to benefit as soon as possible from this full coverage by Health Insurance.
