Mobile phone ban in high schools starting from September 2026: what are the terms? Published on August 25, 2026 - Public Service / Legal and Administrative Information Department (Prime Minister)
The use of mobile phones by students was already banned in kindergartens, primary schools and middle schools since 2018. This ban is being extended to high schools starting from September 2026.

Each high school must now specify in its internal regulations the terms of the ban on the use of mobile phones and other connected devices by students.
This ban can be implemented, for example, through:
-
individual lockers in which students must place their mobile phones upon arriving at the high school;
-
a shared container intended to collect mobile phones from multiple students;
-
an individual pouch in which each high school student must place their phone (the student must lock the pouch upon arriving at the school, then they can unlock it when they leave the school).
Exceptions to this ban can be determined by each school within its internal regulations.
Furthermore, the law systematically allows the use of a mobile phone or connected device by a student for medical reasons (this particularly applies to students with a disability or debilitating health condition).
If a student does not comply with the ban on the use of a mobile phone or connected device, an appropriate response must be provided by the school staff (a graduated, personalized and proportionate response). For example, the mobile phone or connected device can be confiscated; or the student may face disciplinary action in case of repeat offense.
High schools that offer higher education programs (higher technician sections, preparatory classes for grandes écoles) can implement a specific regime to allow the students concerned to use their mobile phones.
