Fires: Protecting Employees and Ensuring Business Continuity Published on August 4, 2026 - Entreprendre Service Public / Direction of Legal and Administrative Information (Prime Minister)

In the face of forest fire episodes, employers must assess the risks associated with exposure to smoke, adapt the organization of work, and implement necessary preventive measures to preserve the health and safety of employees. Support mechanisms for businesses can be mobilized if needed.

The Ministry of Labor reminds businesses of the need to adapt the organization of work to ensure business continuity while guaranteeing the health and safety of employees in territories affected by fires this summer.

Employers must assess the risks related to air pollution resulting from fires and implement adapted preventive measures in consultation with employee representatives or employees.

Thus, a FAQ from the Ministry of Labor:

  • provides guidance on protecting workers exposed to smoke, such as teleworking, limiting travel and outdoor activities, and wearing an FFP2 mask in case of prolonged exposure to smoke;

  • reminds businesses of the support measures and mechanisms available: teleworking, days off or leave with the employee's agreement, recovery of lost hours, and partial activity.

Emergency aid is also put in place by the Urssaf and the CPSTI for businesses and independent workers affected by fires.
